A frustrating defeat at the Gaverbeek

In a direct fight to stay out of the relegation zone, Cercle were left scoreless. Cercle missed some massive opportunities in the second half including on a counter 10 minutes before time. In the final minute, Cercle received another penalty, but Kevin Hoggas could not get past Bostyn.

Paul Clement was happy, however, to see a few players injured in training return for this important match at the Regenboogstadion: Biancone and Taravel were able to start in defence, and Dino Hotic took a place on the bench. Dimitar Velkovski played as left back, allowing Vitinho to move up into midfield. With Kanouté, Omolo and Lopes Da Silva unavailable due to injury or suspension, Charles Vanhoutte played in midfield alongside Hoggas.

The home team deployed the same formation (5-3-2) and tactics with which they were successful a few weeks ago at the Jan Breydel Stadium. After a slow start, the first chance cam after ten minutes when Charles Vanhoutte played n Musaba, but De Bock was able to clear the danger. Hazard set off on a mazy dribble soon after, but it resulted in no more than the first corner of the match.

A goal had to wait a bit longer for the home team, but then they were immediately very close opening the scoring. Kainourgios delivered a handsome shot that clipped the bar off Didillon's fingertips. A few minutes later Marcelin had to clear an effort by Seck off the line. Moments later, Seck again tried to play in Vossen, but both the attacker and Didillon were just unable to reach the ball, allowing Taravel to clear calmly. Cercle then came back into the match and were also close to a goal after half an hour, as Biancone hit a shot on the volley. His effort would have flown far wide, but Ugbo deflected it just over the goal. Taravel then hit a free kick towards the far post, but Marcq was able to eliminate the danger just in front of Vitinho. Then another drawn out attack followed shortly thereafter, but Hazard's shot was too central to trouble Bostyn.

Shortly after the break, Didillon had to push a low shot from Govea away for a corner kick. Cercle's reply followed quickly, but Vitinho's hard cross was well taken by Bostyn. A curling corner from Velkovski was missed by everyone, but Deschacht was the most alert and cleared the danger.

There match then became more open on a poor pitch. Ugbo had a good move, but his cross went just behind Vitinho. Olivier Deschacht was then lost by the Cercle defense on a counter-attack, but he could only fire over. The opportunities for Cercle now followed each other in rapid succession. Ugbo did well on the turn again, but his shot was too wild. Kylian Hazard got off a good cross, but Hoggas missed his header. Moments later, Hoggas had a one-on-one against Bostyn, but his lobbed shot was too high. Musaba also tried his luck on the break, but was unable to take the ball in stride steps and shot over the bar. A few minutes later, Musaba had a better effort, but was unlucky to see his well-struck shot hit the post.

Ten minutes before time, Cercle conceded a tough goal. The substitute Dompé got away from Biancone and his shot made it 1-0 past Didillon. Cercle now went all out and got the chance to equalize. After a foul on Hotic, Kevin Hoggas was set to take a penalty, but he failed to get past Bostyn on both occasions. Cercle left the match scoreless to end a frustrating evening.
