Cercle go unrewarded in a good match after a contentious penalty

Despite a great match, Cercle were left empty-handed away to Antwerp. At the interval, our _Groen-Zwart_ led after a goal from Hotic and shortly after the break came close to doubling the lead several times. An own goal from Popovic and a penalty scored by Alderweireld after an intervention by VAR would eventually turn the game in favor of the hosts.

  
In a crowded and lively Bosuilstadion, it was Antwerp who immediately tried to take control of the game. When Janssen was sent long early on, an alert Radosław Majecki came off his line excellently. Despite a slight dominance on the part of the home team, our _Groen-Zwart_ were not playing too badly. From the half hour mark, Cercle started to threaten more and more. Daland climbed highest on a cross from Somers, but could not beat Butez. After a well-played attack, Hotic and Gboho were just short of finding the opener. Antwerp also continued to look for an opening goal as well — Vermeeren was unable to put his shot on target with two good attempts. Shortly before the break, Cercle would strike, and mercilessly. After Ueda held off Alderweireld well, Gboho played in Hotic perfectly. The winger left Butez no chance and halfway through the match, the _Groen-Zwart_ led nicely.

  
After a first half full of great opportunities, there was more of the same to come after the break. The second half was only seconds away when Muja shot from close range, but Daland was in the right place to block the shot. Cercle were still in search of a second goal, though. Shortly after Ueda forced Butez to make a good save, he was then just short of reaching a sharp cross from Siquet, from which Somers shot wide. Gboho also came close, his shot just whizzing over the crossbar. At the other end, Janssen's shot went a few meters wide and Kerk's equalizer was disallowed after De Laet was flagged offside. Antwerp grew into the match, though, and Popovic unluckily turned a corner kick into his own goal to level the score. Cercle fought for all it was worth, but VAR would call the referee to the monitor after a handball by Somers hand in the box. It was a particularly bitter end to the match, as Alderweireld converted the penalty flawlessly, leaving the _Groen-Zwart_ little time to respond.
