Cercle win a friendly against Mouscron, 5-1
Cercle won a friendly against Royal Excel Mouscron on Friday morning by a convincing 5-1 score. Ackx, Millan, Kanouté, Sampers and Waldo provided the goals for the Groen-Zwart; Mohamed scored for the visitors from the penalty spot.
For Cercle, Kanouté and Waldo Rubio came back from injury and the duo gained the necessary playing time. Youngster Christiaan Ravych was also added to the squad. Since coach Yves Vanderhaeghe is still in quarantine, the match was led by the coaching duo of De Wulf and Muslic, just as had been the case against Genk.
Cercle started the game eagerly and also showed the most initiative in its initial stages. There were no chances, however, until Wolf Ackx finally gave the Groen-Zwart the lead after a nice shot following a pass from Vanhoutte to make it 1-0. Cercle were well-installed in the visitors' half; our goalkeeper Warleson had little to do throughout the first half. The combative Ackx had the chance to make it 2-0, but Mouscron goalkeeper Gillekens pulled off an excellent reflex save. Cercle kept pushing, though, and were rewarded with a second goal just before half time: a cross from Miangue was powered into goal by Millan with a one-touch finish, and 2-0 was the halftime score.
Some changes in the team were made before the start of the second half: Warleson was subbed off for Bruzzese, and Matondo and Somers came for Hotic and Millan respectively while youngster Ravych replaced Sousa. This resulted in almost the same stype of match as before the break: Cercle eagerly were on the attack and shots by Sampers and Matondo were well-saved by Gillekens. In the end, the opposing 'keeper would concede when Kanouté was able to bull his way through the Mouscron defense and slot past Gillekens, making it 3-0.
There was then a sign that the visitors were not conceding completely because during a rare foray into the box Bruzzese took down Simba. Séba guessed the right way but Mohamed's shot was too precise, and it was 3-1. Again it was time for Cercle to respond via a nice bit of play and lovely cross from Lopes via Aske Sampers, which would again extend the lead: 4-1. After a few weeks out with injury, Waldo was finally able to celebrate his return with a goal and made 5-1 the final score.
The visitors from Mouscron also enjoyed a happy reunion with Cercle youth product Calvin Dekuyper and ex-assistant coach José Jeunechamps, who is now the head coach for Les Hurlus. Jérémy Taravel also has a history with Cercle, and is not at Mouscron, but the former captain of the Groen-Zwart did not travel to the Jan Breydel Stadium.
