[Internationals] Pavlovic wins with Serbia against Ireland

Strahinja Pavlovic and Serbia, like the Red Devils, have made an excellent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. The Serbs won 3-2 against Ireland on Wednesday, Pavlovic played the full match.

Many well-known ex-Jupiler Pro League players in the Serbian selection of coach Dragan Stojkovic. For example, Uros Spajic and Aleksandar Mitrovic have a past at RSC Anderlecht, Stefan Mitrovic played 113 games for KAA Gent, Filip Mladenovic played a year at Standard and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was active for KRC Genk between season 2014-2015. With Strahinja Pavlovic, there is now a current Cercle Brugge player in the squad.

Pavlovic only made his debut for the Serbian A-team in September 2020, but for the World Cup qualifying campaign, they are clearly counting on the skills of our central defender. The still only 19-year-old Pavlovic was immediately in the starting line-up against Ireland on Wednesday night in a three-man defence with S. Mitrovic and Milenkovic. Serbia was clearly the better team, but fell behind after only 18 minutes. Vlahovic in the first half and A. Mitrovic (2x) in the second ensured a 3-2 victory.

On Saturday at 20:45, Serbia will take on the Portuguese, with the aim of finishing first in the group.

The results of our internationals

How are our internationals Strahinja Pavlovic, Franck Kanouté and Olivier Deman doing? Find out below!

After Serbia won 3-2 against Ireland last week, the Serbs drew 2-2 against Portugal in the qualification for the World Cup2022 last Saturday. Strahinja Pavlovic played the complete match. The Serbs first trailed 0-2, but eventually managed to come back to 2-2. In the final phase of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to be on his way to give the Portuguese the win, but an ultimate tackle by Mitrovic brought the ball back into play (whether or not already over the line). The draw means that after two matchdays already being played, Serbia leads Group A with four points, together with Portugal. On Tuesday at 18h Serbia plays Azerbaijan.

Franck Kanouté played Friday with Senegal 0-0 equal in and against Congo-Brazzaville. Kanouté came on for Mendy after 78 minutes. Senegal, which was already qualified for the Africa Cup, plays Tuesday against Eswatini.

Olivier Deman is working with the Belgian U23 team on a training week in Genk. Because of COVID, the youngsters don't play an friendly match, but a new qualification campaign for the European Championship 2023 is being prepared.

Reactions after the game of Vanderhaeghe, Pavlovic & Deman

Coach Yves Vanderhaeghe was satisfied with the point against RSCA, but looking back there might have been more to it: "We started the game well, we had a lot of good intentions, but after fifteen minutes RSCA took control of the game. Still, I am curious to see the footage of our first big chance. Kevin Hoggas was actually in a position to score but kicked far wide. I had the feeling he was pulled by his arm and lost his balance. Too bad."
