KVK-Cercle: 5 academy players help make the difference again!

With an average age of 23 years and five players trained at the club's academy, the 0-2 victory against KV Kortrijk is deserving of extra praise. The result was a fine competitive performance from the Groen-Zwart, who deservedly were rewarded with three points.

In Robbe Decostere, Olivier Deman and Thibo Somers, three academy products were in the starting eleven, while Aske Sampers and Charles Vanhoutte came on in the second half. While Cercle has been playing the youngest team in the Belgian top flight for a full season now, it is also finally also being rewarded in terms of results.

In Kortrijk it was Rabbi Matondo, the 21-year-old Welsh winger, who played a large part in Cercle's victory with two goals. The average age of the starting team was just under 24 years. With Sampers (21 years), Vanhoutte (23 years), Alex Millan (22 years) and Vitinho (22 years), coming on, the average age would even drop to 23.

Thibo Somers: “Hopefully we can celebrate again soon with the supporters”

Thibo Somers was once again a scourge of the Eupen defense, playing a complete match and in the end the Cercle youth product was also able to break the deadlock, giving Cercle the lead fifteen minutes from time “It was a very difficult game for us, especially the first half. The game was closely fought for a long time and we didn't create many chances. Eupen played with a very low block and only attacked with long balls. In the second half we came out of the dressing room physically stronger and luckily we can take three points back to Bruges. We do hope that the supporters will be able to return to the stadium soon, because we do miss them.”
