Cercle failed to get three points at home this evening in the West Flemish derby against KV Oostende. After a difficult first half, the visitors led 0-1 after a goal by Vandendriessche. After the break, Cercle created some good opportunities in looking for an equalizer, but Marcelin in particular was unlucky in seeing his header deflect off both the goalkeeper and the post. With this defeat, Cercle again failed to put an end to their current negative run and remained outside the playoff places.
KV Oostende took the initiative in the opening passages of play and created the first chances of the match. On fifteen minutes, the visitors even came close to opening the scoring when an unmarked Sakala headed close to Didillon's goal. Cercle came back into the match, but failed to translate their improved play into any meaningful chances, often playing too slowly or too carelessly to make good on their ascendancy. Shortly before the half hour, though, they nearly had their breakthrough — following a well-worked attack, Ugbo headed a Vitinho cross just wide. However, this presentable chance was answered quickly by the visitors as a pass from Hjulsager released Vandendriessche to score the opening goal, which continued to separate the two sides at halftime.
After the interval, the visitors looked to build on their lead through shots from distance from Vandendriessche and Hjulsager. Cercle had a difficult time building play, but on set pieces, they would threaten, as Hubert saw Hotic’s attempt go wide. Gradually, though the Green and Black came into the match, continuing to put goalkeeper Hubert to the test on a deflected shot from Ugbo and an effort from distance by Hotic. In the final part of the match, Cercle went hell for leather, and were almost rewarded for their increased intensity. Marcelin headed a free kick towards goal, where Hubert was only just able to keep the defender’s attempt out, with some help from the post. However, Bates soon got a second yellow card, forcing the hosts to finish the match playing with ten against eleven. There would be no more strong chances, and KVO would head home with three points.
