Stefan Toonen is Cercle Brugge's new goalkeeping coach

Stefan Toonen (38) is the new goalkeeping coach at Cercle Brugge.

“I am very curious and I am really looking forward to this new challenge”, says a passionate Toonen, who has been involved in the goalkeeping profession for all of his life. After making his debut at Top Oss in Dutch professional football, he was given a chance as a 24-year-old during the preseason at Feyenoord, but a professional contract was not possible at the time. He was, however, given an opportunity at PSV and so he signed in Eindhoven, where he also became acquainted with the coaching profession for the first time. “In addition to being a goalkeeper, I also supervised the youth team's goalkeepers and worked in the goalkeeping school run by the goalkeeping coach of the first team,” says Stefan. “It was then that I discovered that my real passion was more in educating and training goalkeepers.”

After his playing career ended, Stefan made the move to enter the coaching profession. He became a goalkeeping coach with the youth academy at PSV, but he also trained the U15 goalkeepers of the Oranje for two seasons. In recent years it was time for a step up and he most recently was goalkeeping coach of the Indian club Bengaluru FC. At Cercle Brugge, Stefan now has the opportunity to live and work closer to his family again. "Welcome to Cercle, Stefan!”
