Cercle were set to visit the third-placed side in the table five matches from the end of the season at the Luminus Arena in Genk. Onuachu and Ito scored to offer a reminder of the quality of the third-placed side, making it 2-0 at halftime. Against a Cercle playing with ten men, Genk had few problems in holding on to that margin come full time.
Coach Vanderhaeghe had put a few new players into the starting lineup after the cup match, following on from the victory against Waasland Beveren a week earlier, with Van der Bruggen getting a start in midfield.
Genk started brightly and immediately put Cercle under pressure, their hard work in the 10th minute resulting in the opening goal. After a free kick by Bongonda, Onuachu headed the ball past Didillon. Cercle had to work, but fought back to come into the match and Ugbo was fouled in the area, while appeals for a penalty were waved away. Playing on the counter, Genk scored their second, halfway through the first half. Ito was able beat Pavlovic to the ball and hit a curling shot to make it 2-0.
To make matters worse, Hannes Van der Bruggen was sent to the dressing room after 40 minutes for a second yellow card. Yves Vanderhaeghe brought on Anthony Musaba for Denkey after the break, and the Groen-Zwart broke forward again. Even playing a man down, the search continued for a consolation goal, but lacked sharpness in the penalty area and goalkeeper Vandevoordt had a quiet evening for the home team.
Gradually Cercle's resolve flagged and Genk was able to take back control of the game. The hosts did have a few more chances, but Munoz, Dessers and Ito couldn't get their attempts past Didillon who made some good saves to preserve the two-goal margin.
