The win against Beerschot by the numbers

In a match that was unique in taking 4 days to see Cercle seal the three points against Beerschot, the 0-1 victory was also remarkable in other respects. Here are some things to take away from the match:

Average age of Tuesday's starters: 22.18 years

On Saturday evening Cercle had kicked off with a young team in Beerschot, and their average age was 23.4 years, but on Tuesday evening the Groen-Zwart did even better, with an average age of 22.18 years, with only 3 players aged 23 (Robbe Decostere) or older (Thomas Didillon, 25; Dino Hotic, 26).

4 academy products finished the match

Along with fielding a young side, Cercle has continued its rejuvenation with a good combination of experienced players, supplemented with the best young talents, which should provide an ideal foundation for sporting success. An important role is also reserved for the team's own youth products: the Groen-Zwart ended the match in Beerschot with four of its own youth players, three of whom had started the match (Decostere, captain Charles Vanhoutte, Olivier Deman and substitute Thibo Somers), both a clear signal of the club's intent and a reward for hard work of everyone involved in the team's youth setup.

Jesper Daland in the Eleven Sports 'Team of the Week'

Eleven Sports announced their team of the week on Monday, before the last 35 minutes from Beerschot-Cercle had been played, and in Jesper Daland there was one Cercle player included by the broadcaster. In only 55 minutes he was able to turn in a convincing performance for the analysts at Eleven Sports, and he would confirm that Tuesday evening by delivering another excellent performance as Cercle finished with a clean sheet and three points.

The performance of the 21-year-old Daland was therefore something which was noted, but the same can also be said of the other debutants in the defense: Boris Popovic and Edgaras Utkus. Both players, also only 21 years old, had been on trial with Cercle since the beginning of this season and signed permanent contracts with the Groen-Zwart last week.

A first win on the season's opening day since 2011

Another remarkable fact was that it was not since the 2011-2012 season that Cercle was able to win on the opening matchday. On July 30, 2011, Groen-Zwart won 0-1 away to KAA Gent. By scoring with a penalty it was Oleg Iachtchouk who would give Cercle three points -- the team would eventually finish 7th that season.

Thibo Somers: “Hopefully we can celebrate again soon with the supporters”

Thibo Somers was once again a scourge of the Eupen defense, playing a complete match and in the end the Cercle youth product was also able to break the deadlock, giving Cercle the lead fifteen minutes from time “It was a very difficult game for us, especially the first half. The game was closely fought for a long time and we didn't create many chances. Eupen played with a very low block and only attacked with long balls. In the second half we came out of the dressing room physically stronger and luckily we can take three points back to Bruges. We do hope that the supporters will be able to return to the stadium soon, because we do miss them.”

Senna Miangue had a hand in Thibo Somers' opening goal against Eupen with a long throw-in, but the Belgian also realizes that Cercle did not play its best game: “It was not a strong match for us, but in the end we also have to learn to win matches without style. Today was the perfect example: not our best display, but the most important thing is that we won.”
